As you can probably guess from a number of my recent posts, I have been feeling rather nostalgic for the early days of D&D. While wandering through various blogs, I ran across this image of an old newspaper article. I wish I could give credit to the source but I neglected to note which site it was on.

The Roots of D&D

Dungeons and Dragons grew out of the Chainmail rules. Chainmail was essentially rules for miniatures war gaming. It was the fantasy supplement that first added a fantasy aspect to those rules. But go back a step further and Chainmail grew out of what you see in the picture below. Armchair generals are reliving famous historical battles through the use of miniatures.

What is especially interesting is the names in the picture. Third in from the right is Dave Arneson, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons.
