I hope everyone had a wonderful time at Gary Con. I am so jealous. Wish I could have been with you. But instead I got a lot done around the house. Not nearly as much as I had hoped, but I still made some amazing progress. Best of all, I got rid of that nagging voice in my head telling me that I should be working on chores and household projects. Now I feel free to re-focus on my gaming!

Gary Con 2016

I can’t just skip past Gary Con that quickly. I followed everyone’s exploits a little on Facebook and G+. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and posting your pics. It was almost as much fun as being there. The gaming looked fun, but the people are the part of the con that I really would have enjoyed.

I’ve never met any of the Gygax clan. Meeting them, hearing their stories about growing up with Gary, seeing who they’ve become on their own… that would have been a treat. Meeting the artists would have been next on my list. So many wonderfully talented people. Artists new and old would have been a joy to talk to. I heard that Darlene was there as well. That would have been an unexpected pleasure. Her greyhawk map has always been my favorite fantasy map and to this day hangs on the wall above my computer desk. Even David Sutherland managed to make an appearance (in spirit anyway). Someone posted a picture of the framed original 1e DMG cover artwork. What a wonderful piece of memorabilia. That would be a fantastic piece of artwork to have on my gaming room wall.

I gather that there were a number of exciting announcements, interesting discussion groups, and endless gaming of all sorts. I’ve never been to a convention. I really have to make the effort to go to one someday. It sounds like a lot of fun.

I do feel a little sorry for those that went to Gary Con though. After just spending a thousand dollars (and I’m sure that is quite conservative) on airfare, rental car, hotel, restaurants, tickets, gaming books, materials, and memorabilia, it seems like a nasty blow to come home to find that there are a number of can’t miss kickstarters in the works.

Goodman Games announced their Judges Guild Deluxe Collector’s Edition kickstarter, which went live yesterday. Dwarven Forge’s 4th kickstarter: Castle Builder went live earlier today and immediately flew past the initial goal as well as the first few stretch goals. Ral Partha’s Chaos Wars, Wave 2 kickstarter is scheduled to go live around the end of the month. I couldn’t seem to find a statement as to whether the minis are lead, tin, plastic or what-have-you, but however they are cast, the minis look great.

As if the kickstarters weren’t enough, there is the ever-present stream of new user-created products on RPG Now. It is a great time to be a gamer.
