Yesterday, I wanted to read a series of articles I wrote some time ago on Designing Alternative Spell Systems. Finding them was no problem, but when I finished one it was rather cumbersome and unintuitive as to how to get to the next one. I want people to easily navigate to next/previous articles, so I took some time today to create some better controls.
At the bottom of each post, you will now see two new buttons: one with the title of the previous article and one with the title of the next article (unless you are looking at the most recent post). It ended up being more work than I anticipated, but I’m very happy with the way it came out.
Back in January, I also added a “List All Posts” button (located in the sidebar). This dynamically creates a page listing all posts on this blog, in chronological order. Lastly, I created a couple of sidebar widgets to display my favorite posts and the most popular posts (updated each time it’s clicked).
Together, I hope these controls all make it easier to get to the older posts. I know when I’m reading other peoples’ blogs, I rarely go looking for previous posts unless something in particular catches my eye. I hate to think that all my old posts are just sitting there gathering dust, so I’m doing what I can to make it easier to get to them.
Let me know how these controls are working out and if you can think of anything else, that I may have overlooked, that would make it easier to navigate the site.
